Desexing or neutering your pet is a surgical procedure that prevents them from being able to reproduce. In male pets it is commonly referred to as “castration”, and in female pets as “speying”. This is the most frequent surgery performed by our vets, and most commonly your pet is home by the evening of surgery with appropriate pain relief.

The age for desexing in dogs depends on several factors, primarily their breed and size - if unsure, please speak with your veterinarian. Generally speaking, small to medium breed dogs are commonly desexed at 6 months of age, whereas large and giant breed dogs are from 12-24 months of age to allow them to reach skeletal maturity. However, they are never too old to be desexed, even if there is no intention to continue breeding!
